1. Coconut Oil Contains Fatty Acids with Powerful Medicinal Properties

Coconut oil has been rejected by many in the past as a healthy food source, because of its’ high concentration of saturated fat. The fact, is that the saturated fat found in coconut is a short-term, medium-chain saturated fatty acid (MCFA), which is considered a “healthy” form of saturated fat, compared to trans-fat that is commonly found in baked goods, most cakes, cookies, pie crusts and crackers contain shortening, which is usually made from partially hydrogenated vegetable oil.

Trans fatty acid consumption is linked to heart problems, depression and increased cholesterol levels, and recent data indicates that saturated fats, like those in coconuts are harmless. In addition, considerable studies of hundreds of thousands of test subjects indicate that the whole “artery-clogging” notion was a fable.

These studies indicate that the fatty acids from foods in our diet are long-chain fatty acids, but the medium-chain fatty acids in coconut oil are metabolised differently.

The MCFAs go straight to the liver from the digestive tract, where they are expended as a quick source energy or turned into ketone bodies, which can have therapeutic effects on brain disorders like epilepsy and Alzheimer’s. Additionally our liver metabolises these fats, immediately converting it into fuel for the both brain and muscle function, rather than it being stored as fat.

Coconut oil is made up of the healthy fats lauric acid, caprylic acid and capric acid, which contain antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral prosperities to boost the immune system. Lauric acid contains the highest concentration of MCFA fatty acids, approximately 75 percent. The body turn this fat into monolaurin which is claimed to help heal viruses such as herpes, influenza, cytomegalovirus, Helicobacter pylori and Candida.

In one study, varying amounts of medium and long chain triglycerides were fed to 6 healthy men. The men eating the most MCTs ate 256 fewer calories per day, on average.

Another study involving 14 healthy men discovered that those who ate the most MCTs at breakfast ate significantly fewer calories at lunch.

These studies were not significant and only conducted for a short period of time. If this effect were to persist over the long term, it could have a dramatic influence on body weight over a period of several years.

7. The Fatty Acids in Coconut Oil Can Boost Brain Function in Alzheimer’s Patients

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia worldwide and occurs primarily in elderly individuals. In Alzheimer’s patients, there appears to be a reduced ability to use glucose for energy in certain parts of the brain. Ketone bodies can supply energy for the brain and researchers have speculated that ketones can provide an alternative energy source for these malfunctioning cells and reduce symptoms of Alzheimer’s.

In one 2006 study, consumption of medium chain triglycerides led to immediate improvement in brain function in patients with milder forms of Alzheimer’s.

Other studies support these findings and medium chain triglycerides are being intensively studied as potential therapeutic agents in Alzheimer’s disease.
